12 Days | Botswana

Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari Desert, Makgadikgadi, Boteti River & Salt Pans

A unique spectacle is waiting for you in Botswana’s wild; almost unknown to most travelers the great Zebra migration occurs annually in Botswana during wet season. When the usually drylands of Botswana (Makgadikgadi salt pans and Kalahari desert) fill with water and turn into lush green gardens, and when most travelers have left Botswana, thousands of Zebras and some wildebeest kick up plumes of dust as they move from one grazing area to another. Away from mass tourism you can enjoy this incredible sight and also the predators that follow the herds. Also for seasoned travelers this will be a special tour and you will see Botswana’s parks in a way like you have never seen them before.

Standard: Wild-Camping, fully-catered, non-participatory, group joining

Activities: Game drives, walking safaris, excursions in traditional african canoe and meet the san bush people

Best Travel Time: December to May (especially March/April)

overview

We welcome you at Maun Airport and take you to your accommodation where you unwind and prepare for your safari starting the next day.

In the early morning we pick you at your hotel or lodge or the airport in Maun. The tour starts at 07:30h with a transfer on dust roads in an open sided 4×4 safari vehicle. In the Okavango we meet up with you meet your poler, a local villager, who will take you on an unforgettable journey through the channels of the Okavango. Born and raised in the Okavango Delta, our polers and guides show you their home which they are very passionate and knowledgeable about.

Our experienced polers take you on a journey deep in the water system. Enjoy the peace of the delta in a Mokoro, the traditional one tree-canoe. For lunch you stop on an island, where you enjoy a packed lunch and then endulge in a walking safari. The Mokoro then takes you to your camp on the side of a river channel where our team already awaits you. Before your first bush dinner you can freshen up. Sometimes we even have time to include a game drive on the first day. After dinner, you sit around the campfire sharing the stories of the day.

Spend the whole day deep inside the Okavango. Explore the channels by Mokoro (traditional DugOut Canoe) and go on guided bush walks and gamewalks with an experienced guide on the islands of the Okavango Delta. You are woken up with a warm “Dumela“ (That is the Setswana word for “Hello“) and a light breakfast waiting for you.

After coffee, tea and breakfast you go on your first game viewing activity (either a nature walk or a canoe excursion). When returning to camp you have the opportunity to shower. Afterwards you will be served brunch. In the afternoon you enjoy a second game viewing activity often a gam drive or another Mokoro canoe tour.

Enjoy delicious meals cooked over the bushfire by our experienced bush chef and share the experiences of the day in the evening sitting around the bushfire before falling asleep in your comfortable tent with the noises of animals and the bush around you.

Enjoy a last DugOut Canoe tour or a game drive (your guide will let you know depending on local circumstances) before heading back to town. Before sunset you will be back in Maun, where you can sink in your hotel bed before the wild camping adventure continues the next day. You are accommodated in a good midrange lodge or guesthouse with en-suite rooms. This is the best way of exploring the Okavango Delta! A real authentic experience of the delta ecosytem and a unique experience to meet and interact with locals on a personal and non-touristy basis.

After breakfast we head to CKGR where the camp is set up in the Deception Valley. During and shortly after good summer rains (September to January), the flat grasslands of the reserve’s northern reaches teem with wildlife, which gather at the best grazing areas. These include springbok and gemsbok, as well as wildebeest, hartebeest, eland and giraffe.
At other times of the year, when the animals are more sparsely distributed, the experience of travelling through truly untouched wilderness, of seemingly unending dimensions, is amazing. We will spend the whole day on a transfer drive with a lunch stop on the way where we enjoy our packed meal. During the second half of the day, we will start seeing some animals in the desert. We arrive at camp in the evening, where you will be treated to a hot camp shower before proceeding to dinner around a campfire

Rise and shine and say hello to a fresh morning over coffee/tea and rusks for a 06 & 30hrs morning game drive to Sunday Pan waterhole, and have a coffee break at Passarge Valley. Under the dense umbrella thorn Acacia tortillis thickets cheetah and lion often rest up in the mid-day heat and if we are lucky we get to see them. CKGR boasts an amazing variety of birds, believe: Secretary bird, Kori Bustard and Ostrich are the most prominent of the species to be spotted, with good chances of seeing Lapped-faced Vulture and White-backed Vulture too.

We will continue to explore this amazing landscape in search of its beauties. Our final leg of the morning drive will take us back through Leopard Pan to arrive at camp for lunch and enjoy an afternoon siesta. After a well deserved rest we will depart for an evening game drive to Deception Pan where we will enjoy a great sunset. Once the sun goes down we will head back to camp.

After another early morning wake up and a light breakfast we will head out for a game drive at the crack of dawn with the hopes of spotting cheetah, a resident pride of lion and several leopard whose territories include parts of the pan. We will head back to camp around mid morning to enjoy warm showers before a scrumptious breakfast. During hours of the hot midday sun, we take a siesta before heading on our final Kalahari afternoon game drive.

Once we have had breakfast we will embark on our vehicle for a drive to Makgadikgadi National Park. The reserve might have little farewell surprises as we leave so keep those cameras ready to capture the last memories of the Kalahari. We will enjoy the leisurely drive as we continue our learning about this reserve and its beauties, mostly very unique.
We anticipate to arrive in Makgadikgadi in the early afternoon, depending on what we spot along the way. We enter Makgadikgadi National Park through the west gate and pretty immediately start seeing zebras on our way to our camp. We will go on a first short evening game drive to a nice sunset spot over the Boteti River.

Boteti River is a paradies. On a morning and an afternoon game drive we will explore this beautiful area in Makgadikgadi National Park. Around lunchtime herds of Zebras gather at the river for water. You won`t know in which direction to point your camera first.

After breakfast we start our driver from the west of Makgadikgadi National Park along the Boteti River Channel to the east gate and then we head south to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. After lunch at Gweta Lodge (at your own expense) we start the drive into Ntwetwe Pan. First stop is at the colony of Meerkats, who live on the edge of the Ntwetwe salt pan. With a little luck we have the once in a life time opportunity to observe their natural behaviours and charming personalities from almost touching distance!

After visiting the Meerkats we then continue to the vast Ntwetwe salt pan, which forms part of one of the largest salt pans in the world, likened to being on the surface of the moon, the sight of the salt pan is truly one to behold!

Today we are up for a special treat: We will sleep under the stars in the vast open landscape of the salt pans (no tent). With the sky like a semi-globe above and around us, we enjoy this awe-inspiring moment and endulge in stargazing. You can sit around the camp fire until you get in your bedroll and close your eyes for your last night in the wild.

Wake up in the salt pan to an unforgettable sunrise. Enjoy the moment and a cup of coffee. And after breakfast we hope to meet the san people who take us on a bush walk where we can learn about their culture and traditions.
Around lunchtime we are back in civilization and we start our journey back to Maun.

After breakfast we transfer you to Maun Airport where it is time to say goodbye. With plenty of pictures in your bags and memory, you start your journey back home and hopefully taking a part of Africa with you.
